Two of the most established names in the ASICS tennis shoe lineup going head-to-head. The GEL-Resolution X and the Solution Speed FF 4 are built for opposite ends of the court, and picking between them comes down to knowing what kind of player you are.

Two Different Philosophies
The GEL-Resolution X hits the marks for stability, cushioning, and durability. It is the shoe ASICS builds for players who grind out long rallies from the baseline and want a shoe that will hold up match after match. The Solution Speed FF 4 takes the opposite approach: it is agile and fast, stripped down for players who win points by creating pressure with their foot speed.
Neither shoe is trying to do the other's job, and that is what makes this comparison worth having before you buy. Pick based on how you actually play, not on which shoe looks better in the box.
GEL-Resolution X: Built for the Baseline
The GEL-Resolution line is ASICS' best-selling tennis shoe, now up to its tenth version, and this update doubles down on comfort without giving up the stability the line is known for. The upper wraps the foot with a little more width than the narrower Resolution 8 and 9, and added eyelets let you customize the fit across the top of the foot. A Gel unit in the forefoot cushions the metatarsal area, which matters if that is where you tend to feel court impact.

ASICS markets the Resolution X for baseliners, and the DYNAWALL system backs that up with lateral support during quick transitions. The medial ankle collar sits noticeably higher than the lateral side for added stability without sacrificing agility. On the durability side, the outsole comes with a warranty and the upper uses a material built to hold up through hard court battles.
- FF BLAST Plus Eco midsole foam for a softer landing and more responsive toe-off, with up to 20 percent more foam than the standard FF BLAST.
- DYNALACING with extra eyelets so you can tailor the fit to your foot width.
- DYNAWALL stability system extending into the heel for lateral support.
Taylor Fritz, Matteo Berrettini, Jasmine Paolini, Lorenzo Musetti, and Arthur Fils all wear the Resolution line on tour. You can read the team's full breakdown in the GEL-Resolution X review.
Solution Speed FF 4: Built for Speed
Speed players have relied on the Solution Speed FF line for years to get around the court faster than whoever is standing across the net. The FF 3 built a loyal following but had two real complaints: durability and a lack of stability during hard lateral cuts. ASICS addressed both with the FF 4.

The updated FlyteFoam midsole is noticeably softer and springier than the FF 3, which makes it a more practical choice for players who spend hours on court each week rather than just a handful of matches. Forefoot comfort got specific attention too. The FF 4's upper wraps the midfoot a little less tightly than the FF 3 and opens up extra room through the toe box, letting your toes sit in a more natural position instead of getting squeezed on hard cuts and forward sprints. ASICS also reworked the shoe's flex points, making it easier to bend through the forefoot for a cleaner push-off. The PRECISION-SOLE outsole, built with ASICSGRIP rubber and shaped using wear data pulled from real players, delivers confident traction on hard cuts and quick first steps. The fit runs true to size and locks the foot in securely.
- FLYTEFOAM technology, a lightweight midsole foam that delivers a comfortable cushioning experience.
- SPEEDTRUSS technology, which improves quickness and cutting motions.
- PRECISION SOLE with ASICSGRIP rubber in the toe area, offering excellent traction prior to toe-off.
- PU loop and eyelet loops on the upper's medial side to help prevent the shoelaces from breaking.
This shoe is for attacking, aggressive players who prioritize quickness over cushioning. If you take the ball early, rush the net, and rely on sharp directional changes to create pressure, the FF 4 is built around that style of play. It is worn on tour by Belinda Bencic and Jack Draper, and is the centerpiece of ASICS' "Move Your Body, Move Your Mind" campaign. Full details are in the Solution Speed FF 4 review.
