Naomi was born in Japan, but moved to America when she was three years old. She has an older sister Mari who also plays professional tennis. After turning pro in 2013, she made her debut at the 2014 Bank of the West Classic and gained her first WTA level win against Sam Stosur. She climbed through the rankings quickly and soon captured her first WTA Singles title at the 2018 BNP Paribas Open. Later that year she would surprise everyone winning the 2018 Women's Singles US Open defeating her idol Serena Williams, and early in 2019 capturing the Women's Singles Australian Open against Petra Kvitova. She is an aggressive baseliner that loves her forehand. Her idol growing up was Serena Williams and her favorite city is Tokyo.
