Frequently Asked Questions

Get clear, practical answers to common questions about racquet terminology, sizing, performance, and selection.

What are different racquet types?
Three categories cover most players. Power frames are lighter with larger heads (100+ sq. in.) — built for players who want depth without changing their swing. Control frames are heavier with smaller heads (95–98 sq. in.) — built for advanced players who generate their own pace and want precision back. Tweeners sit in between and suit most intermediate players well.
How does head size & weight affect my play?
Head size determines forgiveness. Larger (100–115 sq. in.) = more room for error. Smaller (85–98 sq. in.) = tighter response, demands cleaner contact. Weight determines stability — heavier frames absorb pace better, lighter frames are easier to swing. Most recreational players land in the 10–11 oz. range. On grip: when in doubt, go smaller and layer an overgrip to dial in the fit.
How do I choose the right racquet for my skill level?
Start with your swing speed and how much power you generate on your own. Beginners: go lighter with a larger head (100–105 sq. in.). Intermediate: a tweener (98–102 sq. in.) gives you a balance of both. Advanced: heavier control frames (95–98 sq. in.) reward a full, consistent swing. Still unsure? What's the difference between a tennis racket and a racquet?
Nothing — same equipment, different spelling. "Racquet" is the sport-specific spelling used in tennis, squash, and badminton. "Racket" is the everyday general spelling. Both are correct.
What are the best tennis racquet brands?
Wilson, Babolat, HEAD, and Yonex dominate the tour and carry strong lineups at every level. Tecnifibre and Dunlop are worth serious consideration — underrated by casual shoppers, trusted by pros. We carry the full range from every major brand so you can compare side by side without brand bias.
What grip size do I need?
Most adults land between 4 1/4 and 4 5/8 inches. Quick test: grip the racquet normally and slide your opposite index finger between your fingertips and palm — it should fit snugly. If it doesn't fit or falls through, adjust accordingly. Rule of thumb: size down when uncertain. You can always add an overgrip to build it up; you can't shrink a handle.
What's the difference between an open and a closed string pattern?
Open patterns (16×19, 16×18) give strings more room to move, which produces more topspin and a livelier feel off the bed. Closed patterns (18×20) lock strings in tighter, giving a flatter, more consistent response with better durability. If you hit with heavy spin from the baseline, open. If you're a flat hitter who values precision, closed.
What racquets do tennis pros use?
The frames you see on tour are versions of the same racquets sold here — but pros customize heavily. Added lead tape, different grip builds, tighter tolerances, and string setups that rarely match what comes stock. The model is the same; the spec is not. Browse by player to find the frame your favorite pro is based on.
