adidas Cybersonic 2: Close to the Court Support
adidas, one of tennis' top brands, had a busy beginning to 2025. It launched two new Adizero tennis shoe models; the Ubersonic 5, and the Cybersonic 2. Both shoes are designed with speed in mind, but what makes the Cybersonic a bit more technical is the Energy Rod system that runs the full length of the shoe. The rods first appeared in the adidas running category where they help runners with support and energy return. We took the cybersonic tennis shoe to the practice court to see what version 2 was all about.
adidas Cybersonic Tennis Shoe: Review
Like the Ubersonic 5, the Cybersonic 2 sits closer to the court surface. This creates a more dynamic ride and it gives the player an enhanced sense of agility to make those last-second changes of direction. While slightly heavier than the Ubersonic 5, the Cybersonic 2 offers more comfort and support, thanks to LightStrike midsole cushioning and Energy Rods. The rods are a carbon exoskeleton that matches the structure of the bones in the forefoot. The shoe has some nice spring to it, and for a lightweight shoe, it delivers comfort but also useful stiffness for support.
More Durable Upper Material
A fair criticism of the original Cybersonic was how fast the upper got torn up on hard courts. Thankfully, adidas addressed this with bolstered abrasion protection around the medial toe and tougher engineered mesh throughout the upper. They are not going to hold up as well as a Barricade, but the improvements are solid for a lightweight match day shoe.
Best of the Rest
Reinforced eyelets at the top of the redesigned lacing system help protect the laces on the hard courts. The Pull tab and tongue have a more premium feel thanks to suede cutouts, and the Shark Skin Split lining keeps the foot from sliding around.
Wrap Up
Most lightweight shoes do not offer adequate comfort and support. The Cybersonic 2 does a remarkable job for supporting the forefoot thanks to the energy rod exoskeleton. It also delivers a more comfortable experience than the ultralite Ubersonic 5. For those wondering, we found the Cybersonic to run a little snug, so you might consider increasing your size by 1/2 when ordering.
