2026 Wilson Pro Staff Classic Review

2026 Wilson Pro Staff Classic Review

To kick off the new year, Wilson has released the new Pro Staff Classic tennis racquet!

Wilson has released yet another Pro Staff model, and this one is going back to its roots. Now with a retro-inspired “classic” cosmetic design, this version of the Pro Staff retains modern technology, keeping this racquet competitive against the likes of the game’s contemporary power-forward, spin-heavy play style.

A quick introduction: My name is Spencer. I’ve played tennis since I exited the womb (kind of), and I’ve used a Wilson Pro Staff for the majority of my time on court. I grew up, like many, idolizing Roger Federer and watching (in awe) as the Swiss Maestro turned the court into a canvas for his masterpieces. Looking back, I probably shouldn’t have been using a Pro Staff 90 BLX as a 12-year-old–much too heavy for a young kid and way too small a head size–but hey, I was living the dream! Although I use the Wilson RF 01 now, I’m still a huge fan of the Pro Staff. Its distinctive profile is something other tennis brands have tried (and failed) to replicate.

If there were a racquet that defined tennis heritage, it would have to be the Wilson Pro Staff. Not only is it a legendary racquet that has stood the test of time, it is also a racquet that has been wielded–over decades–by some of the most legendary tennis players of all time. Most notably, Roger Federer used it for his entire career. Other massive names, such as Grigor Dimitrov, Jimmy Connors, and Pete Sampras, are just some of the names to have once brandished the great Pro Staff.

Pro Staff purists, such as myself, tend to enjoy the finer things in life… I’d like to believe. The Wilson Pro Staff is a racquet made for those seeking control above all else. Its thin beam and stiff frame is meticulously designed to enhance feel and precision, making it a deadly weapon and oftentimes a get-out-jail-free card. Over the years, its above-average weight has contributed to the racquet’s surprising power output. Though known for its control and finesse, the Pro Staff becomes canon when striking the ball cleanly.

Pro Staff Cosmetics: Back to Black

Thankfully, after some years with the rather unloved brownish-gold of the Pro Staff v14, the Pro Staff Classic brings back that signature black colorway that tennis fans around the world have come to love… or fear. The new Pro Staff Classic is taking things one step further by truly embracing its past. This new version is reminiscent of the Pro Staff days of old – Black coloring and a retro font for the finishing touch.

“Pro Staff has been such an integral part of our brand and will continue to be so,” Michael Schaeffer, Wilson global product director of racquet sports, told Forbes. “Based on how the game is evolving, we faced this decision of do you modernize and change the Pro Staff to a point it is no longer recognizable, or do you give it its space and maintain the DNA as true as possible and bring back the classic name?”

Even though the new Pro Staff’s cosmetics are a thing of the past, its technologies are anything but.

Vintage Playability Meets Modern Tech

  • Braid 45 Construction – The frame uses double-braided fibers arranged at a 45° angle, which enhances stability and pocketing feel on ball contact.

  • Paradigm Bending Technology – A carbon-fiber lay-up designed to optimize the flex between the hoop and shaft, blending classic Pro Staff feel with modern performance.

  • String Mapping – The Classic models feature strategically spaced string beds (denser in the center) for enhanced precision and consistent feel.

  • Precision-Oriented Design for Advanced Players – The Pro Staff Classic is described by Wilson as precision-oriented and ideal for advanced players, reflecting the racket’s focus on control and feel.

Tennis continues to evolve. Over the years, the sport has become more demanding. A racquet’s ability to play constantly while providing the player with options is expected. While the Wilson Pro Staff, admittedly, has lost favor over the years, it’s still an amazing racquet for advanced tennis players. For players seeking control and touch, it’s arguably the BEST racquet out there.

How Does it Play?

The Wilson Pro Staff Classic plays… like a Pro Staff (gasp!).

If you’ve ever used a Pro Staff before, you’ll know exactly what I mean. However, if you’ve never played with one, then you don’t know the pure exactness of the Pro Staff. I’m talking about surgical precision; tactical, deadly accuracy. When you strike a ball with the Pro Staff and feel the ball hit the strings, you’ll come to know exactly where it will land on the other side of the net. That’s why this racquet is loved by some of the best tacticians of the game.

Unlike many racquets, the Pro Staff is NOT known for absorbing vibration; nonetheless, it’s still a comfortable racquet to use. While its sweet spot is second to none, its thin beam and small head size offer little forgiveness. That said, advanced players enjoy this racquet’s responsiveness; its ability to relay to its user exactly where the ball will go after a shot. The Pro Staff demands its user hit cleanly, confidently, and smoothly through every shot. Do so, and you’re on your way to playing like prime Federer.

The Pro Staff is less of a racquet and more of a paintbrush, a tool to create art with. I’m being dramatic, but I’m being serious when I say the Pro Staff is a useful tool when it comes to crafting points out of nothing. Those who use this racquet report having the ability to strategize mid-point thanks to the endless options this racquet provides.

Heavy Frame Yet Easy to Swing

The Pro Staff line has always been a challenging racquet for beginner to intermediate players to use because of its heavy frame. While the Classic is still quite hefty (at 11.1 oz unstrung), it's surprisingly easy to swing. Why? The Wilson Pro Staff Classic is super HEAD LIGHT... meaning most of the racquet's weight is found in the handle. This makes the racquet easier to handle and all around more maneuverable.

If you're on the fence, the Pro Staff Classic actually comes in two lighter options: The Pro Staff 97L Classic (1o.2 oz unstrung) and the Pro Staff Team Classic Prestrung (9.9 oz unstrung).
