Nicknamed "Mat," he began playing tennis at age 4 with his brother Jacopo. As a kid he also competed in swimming, football and judo, but when he turned age 8 his younger brother asked him to play more tennis and that's what inspired him to pursue tennis career. In 2017 he made is ATP main draw debut at the Italian Open and reached the Next Generation ATP Finals the same season. The following year he captured his first ATP singles title in Gstaad, Switzerland defeating Roberto Bautista-Agut. His favorite surface is hard and favorite tournament is the Italian Open in Rome. His idols growing up were Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, and is big fan of LeBron James. If he wasn't playing tennis, his dream job is to be a wildlife biologist, working with animals.
