Thomas John "Tommy" Paul began playing tennis at the age of 7, being introduced to the sport by his parents. He grew up playing in the Greenville clay courts, and as such became uncharacteristically adept at clay compared to the typical American player. Throughout his junior career, he was among the best in his class with a career high of rank No. 3. In 2015, he reached 2 junior Grand Slam finals, beating Taylor Fritz in the French Open boys' singles to win that title. He turned pro later that same year, making his Grand Slam debut at the 2015 US Open.
