YONEX S-Fit 1 Racquet Review

100 Square Inches 10.5 oz Unstrung 16*19 String Pattern

For 2010, Yonex has launched a new line of racquets, called S-Fit, which feature an array of technology. Whether it’s the adjustable grommet system, use of carbon nanotubes or an oval pressed shaft with cutouts, the S-Fit draws attention.

I recently had the chance to put the S-Fit 1, their flagship model, through the paces across a few hitting sessions. My racquet was strung using the Comfort grommets in the mid 50’s with Wilson NXT. Comfort setting is designed to provide enhanced ball feel and most similar to a traditional set up.

The biggest change for me was the width which tapers between 25-26mm throughout the frame.

Forehands were steady and I was able to hit the ball consistently with some pace while the 16*19 pattern allowed me to impart enough spin to keep the ball inside the court.

I really enjoyed hitting a one-handed backhand with the S-Fit 1 as it really allows you to take an aggressive cut at the ball. Those who hit with a 2hbh should check the length of the grip as it felt a touch short to me.

Volleying is where I enjoyed the greater width of the racquet and oval pressed shaft. Despite being more of a tweener weight wise, I wasn’t pushed around on the court. The 69 RA flex rating kept my play at the net accurate and consistent.

Serves and returns. If you were looking to blast your opponent off the court you wouldn’t be reading this review. However if you have a dependable and consistent serve and like hitting the kicker, the S-Fit is for you. Returns are similar to the forehand as the moderate power allows you to hit out a bit without worrying about it hitting the back fence.

Customization. While a tweener out of the box, it wouldn’t take much to put the racquet into the 12oz-strung range with a leather grip and some lead tape, which would also add to the power. The grommet system also allows for some different setups and options

The result of all this? If you have a game that is based on consistency and/or defense while bringing some of your own power, look to the S-Fit 1. Club players, 3.0-4.0 retrievers and doubles players who thrive on accuracy should all put this on a must list to demo.
