Wilson Pro Open Lite BLX Tennis Racquet

The Pro Open Lite BLX by Wilson is an interesting variation of the Pro Open, which is the flagship of the Pro family. With help from Mother Nature and advances in engineering Wilson was able to weave basalt – a volcanic rock – in the matrix of the frame for greater durability. At a slight 1 pt. head heavy balance, 102 square inches, and between 9.5 and 10.0 ounces at its strung weight, I didn’t know what to expect. But was I ever surprised.

Groundstrokes
With an ample hitting zone and an open 16 by 19 string pattern, access to spin was readily available. Even though the racquet is light weight, I’d expected its uncommon head size to make it awkward to wield. But that wasn’t the case. I was surprised by how maneuverable it was. Like the serve, hitting in the sweet spot and generating power was not a problem, but controlling the ball proved more difficult. I typically take long and fast cuts at the ball. To keep the ball in play, I had to shorten my stroke to compensate for the racquet’s power. Stability was another area this where this frame lacked. Overcoming the weight or spin of an oncoming ball was difficult.

Volleys
The maneuverability of this racquet was helpful at net, and the 102 square inch head size was forgiving. The racquet performs well with touch shots, but some more weight could have been useful for heavy balls.

Serve
The serve was lots of fun. Coming from a 95 square inch head size, I considered 102 square inches more than enough breathing room. I really went after the ball as it lied in suspense in mid air for a nanosecond above my tossing hand. The pop I was able to generate was addicting, but it prevented me from placing the ball with precision. My serve is one of my favorite and reliable shots, but it was rendered null with this frame.

Overall
The Wilson Pro Open Lite is an interesting addition to the Pro Family line of racquets. It is maneuverable, and packs plenty of punch due to its larger head size. But the lack of stability and control could be concerns for a more advanced player. I’d recommend this racquet to younger players and those of small stature.
