‘Firmness’ and ‘extremely light’ don’t usually go hand-in-hand in the racquet world, but Wilson’s new BLX Surge might be onto something. Don’t let the 9.8 ounces this new stick weighs in fool you. Anything under 10 ounces and 100 square inches is generally for the senior player or those new-to-the game juniors looking to get around on a frame. But the BLX Surge blends some nice big-hitting specialties with the feel and flex of traditionally lighter frames that makes it a nice find for just about every playing style below advanced.

 

 

Want to be quick at the net or reflex those hard hit service returns? This will be your new best friend as it is very mobile and maneuverable. Still want to be able to stick that mid-court forehand? The Surge will get you there.

 

The surprising stability and plentiful spin access (due to the 16 x 19 open string pattern) is apparently due to the BLX Technology Wilson has introduced in their current generation of frames and it really is something to behold or give a test on. Basalt Fibers (basalt is normally found in volcanic rocks) are woven across this frame to reduce the vibration of off-center hits and soups up the ample sized sweet spot on dead-center hits.

 

The BLX Surge has a nice, clean feel to it with just a hair over what would be called a moderate power level. The even balance and light weight really makes this a feel-player’s delight, however. Slices dive bomb into the corners with this frame.

 

While those Wilson advanced players who love their BLX’s Six-One’s probably won’t be in any hurry to trade down in weight, everyone else who loves Wilson’s classic frames from beginner to high intermediate can still appreciate what the BLX Surge has to offer.
