Intro

The Dunlop FX 500 Lite introduces the latest game improvement technologies in a lightweight spec. This new racquet features an open 16 x 19 string pattern, a variable 23-26-23 millimeter beam, and a light 9.5 ounce unstrung weight for enhanced power and forgiveness. Like other members of the series, the FX 500 Lite has Sonic Core Technology with Infinergy to provide explosiveness and a comfortable hitting response. The 500 Lite also comes with Dunlop’s new Power Boost Frame Geometry which makes the head shape more aerodynamic for greater mobility. The slightly wider throat section with Flex Touch Resin, a unique elastomer compound, ensures comfort and better stability. I wondered how it would compare to the SX 300 Lite, which I playtested earlier this year.

Groundstrokes

The FX 500 Lite is a very user-friendly racquet off the ground. I had to swing a little slower than usual but once I got into a rhythm, I was able to hit crisp, powerful groundstrokes. Devoted beginners and intermediate players will appreciate the power, spin, and accuracy that this stick provides on both forehands and backhands. It only weighs 10.1 ounces strung, so players will be able to swing faster to add spin and power to their baseline game. To me, the only downside was that it felt a bit stiff when I tried to attack the ball crosscourt and hit winners. With this racquet, the key is to stay patient, swing fairly slow, and let the frame do the work.

Volleys

This light and mobile racquet played solid at the net. I was able to get the frame in place quickly and get to every volley within my reach. It felt speedy, and this speed helped me react quickly to the early strikes from my opponent. The FX 500 Lite also delivered remarkable stability and impressive touch as well. Whether I needed to go down the line or crosscourt, I could punch the racquet forward to hit my targets. Developing players looking to improve their volley technique will enjoy this racquet.

Serves

I liked the FX 500 Lite on serves. Thanks to the light weight, I could swing fast, and get the right timing to hit great serves. I tried a combination of kick and flat serves, and both types felt comfortable — thanks to Dunlop’s Power Boost Groove under the grommets. I also found it easy to place my serves down the “T”, out wide, or at the body of my opponent. I think that improving players will appreciate this racquet for the reliability it displays on serves. But not only can you get the serves in, you can also execute placement in different areas of the service box to start points off with a bang.

Overall

The FX 500 Lite is an excellent racquet for developing juniors or recreational adults looking for extra power while they develop their mechanics. Thanks to its lighter weight, players can reach every shot and get the racquet in place to hit the ball. It provides a good mix of power and precision from the baseline while remaining remarkably stable at net and on serve. Improving intermediate players looking to take their game to the next level should demo the Dunlop FX 500 Lite.

NOTE: I playtested this racquet using Wilson Sensation Plus strung at 55 lbs.
