Dunlop Biomimetic 400 Racquet Review

The Dunlop Biomimetic 400 is one of the latest racquets to be released within the Biomimetic line. The design of these racquets was to imitate the human bone structure, and the aero dynamics of the frame were designed after marine life to give the racquet less drag through the air. I’ve now been using the Dunlop Biomimetic 400 regularly for over a month now, and I think that this is a solid beginner to intermediate racquet. I was actually quite taken aback at how crisp the frame moved through with my swings, I actually bought into the marketing of this racquet! I liked the open pattern of the strings; it allowed the ball to stick to the racquet long enough to give it some nice top spin and control. The weight of the racquet was pretty evenly distributed, but felt almost too light because it was so well balanced.

Serve
This racquet did not generate any mind blowing serves. Most of the serves that I produced were with top spin. It was difficult for me to get into a rhythm with this racquet on serving at first because of the oval design of the head, and my sweet spot was minimized.

Ground strokes
I was able to control the ball with ease and little effort on the forehand returns. The evenly balanced frame felt crisp to the touch, and was great on short ball returns.  One of my only complaints about this racquet is that because it is so light, deep court placement took more effort on my part.  I generate a lot of power in my swings, so I was fine with it, but if you don’t have enough gusto in your swing - start pumping iron before you take on this racquet.

Volleys
The Dunlop Biomimetic 400 performed well in volleys.  I was able to place it down the line with little effort.  Over head volleys were a bit of a challenge initially, again due to the design of the head.   Drop shots and slices were easy generated with the racquet - in fact, volleys were probably my most favorite part of this racquet.

Overall

I would strongly recommend this racquet to a player hitting at a 2.0 – 4.0. The Dunlop Biomimetic definitely helped me control and handle the ball much better on my volleys, and I actually believed all of the R&D claims behind this racquet. However, I kept going back to my personal racquet after each 2nd set of the match, and that was purely due to the fact that I am used to placing my balls deep down the line.
