Colorphobe Cured by Martina Hingis

By Tiffany Thor

This year I made a new year’s resolution that I would add more color to my tennis wardrobe and stop stuffing my closet with neutrals. As is customary with resolutions, I broke it within a week. Knowing I can’t break a promise, one of my friends had me promise her that I’d veer clear of my usual go-tos. But everything colorful seemed too trendy for my taste. Until I saw the Martina Hingis collection from Tonic, that is. As the story goes, when Hingis first wore apparel from the Canadian company Tonic during an exhibition match at Wimbledon she was so impressed with the comfort and quality that she actually approached them about a line specifically for tennis. The result is a collection of functional yet fashion-forward pieces that celebrate a woman’s form.

Let me start with the basics. The fabric has sweat-wicking technology – but, honestly, whose doesn’t? What makes these pieces stand out is the hand. The fabric is more substantial than most other brands without making you feel like you’re trying to squeeze into a scuba suit. Also impressive: too often companies construct their pieces with built in bras that never seem to offer the level of support or modesty that I need, but that’s not the case with Tonic tops. I felt completely covered in the Top Spin Tennis Tanks as well as the Wimbledon Dress, which is the strappiest of the bunch. The colors in the collection are as bold as Martina herself and though they come with names like “Blossom”, they are not for shrinking violets (which was perfect for my mission).

Of course my favorite pieces are the Alley Tennis Polo in White and the Rally Dress in black – but not just because old color habits die hard. The Polo feels fantastic against the skin and is one of the most flattering fits I’ve found in sleeveless tennis tops. The Rally Dress is super sexy and could easily go straight from the court to a night on the town without anyone catching on. I love, love, love the asymmetrical top and diagonal seams that are strategically placed to showcase your curves. But that’s not to slight any of the other pieces. The Top Spin Tennis Tank together with the Base Tennis Short is my new staple; I stocked up on them in every color.

As if the pieces themselves weren’t exciting enough, Tonic is a company dedicated to utilizing sustainable resources and reducing their ecological footprint. So not only does the Volley Tennis Dress make you feel empowered as a woman and player, you can feel good about purchasing from a company that has considered much more than the impact their product has on their proverbial pocketbook.
