Groundstrokes
Don’t let the pink paint scheme fool you, the Drive Z Lite is a capable performer from the baseline. Its light weight allows for easy racquet head speed. The open string pattern also allows for easy access to spin so it’s no problem to move between hitting with extra topspin and flattening shots out. The frame generates an adequate amount of pace but it lacks the power and weight of shot that a frame with more weight would have. The slightly more head heavy balance adds some pop off the ground, but balls did not penetrate into the court as deeply as other frames in the Babolat line. While the Drive Z Lite may not have massive power, it does play consistently. I had an easier time controlling the ball than the Drive Max 105 I tested before this one. The smaller head size seemed to offer better directional accuracy while still having a forgiving sweet spot for contact. I also prefer smaller head sizes when executing touch shots and I found drop shots and slices fairly easy to execute with this frame. The Drive Z Lite is also maneuverable, making it easy to use when stretched out on the defensive in a rally. The Drive Z Lite will have some trouble in stock form against bigger hitters, but for intermediate players it offers a good blend of power and control that many will find appealing.
Volleys
The Drive Z Lite is a capable frame at the net. The 100” head and low static weight make it easy to move around at the net. I found it easier to position on reflex volleys than the larger Drive Max 105. The easy maneuverability makes it simple to stretch for low volleys and defensive shots. Like many lower weight racquets, the Drive Z Lite requires more effort from the player to effectively put away volleys. If you play shots too casually, they have a tendency to float. The key at the net with this frame is to use it aggressively and be prepared to move forward and finish balls early. Players willing to do so will be rewarded. I was able to execute drop and touch shots pretty consistently but still would have liked a bit more feedback from the racquet. Overall, the Drive Z Lite will more than hold its own at the net, making it a versatile weapon for singles or doubles play.
Serves
Serving with the Drive Z Lite is very consistent. The light weight makes it easy to accelerate through contact and add good pace to your serve. The frame still doesn’t quite have the pop of a heavier model, but will have plenty for those seeking a racquet that is easier to swing. Directional accuracy was good for me. I was able to move the serve around the box and keep my opponent off balance. The open string pattern allows for good spin generation, making it easy to mix in kick and slice serves. I could see myself getting a bit more pop and spin out of the frame with a different string combo so there is definitely room for players to squeeze a bit more performance from the Drive Z Lite on serves.
Overall
Clearly Babolat is aiming the Drive Z Lite Pink at women (or anybody who loves pink I suppose) and they have put together a solid option. The racquet has good pop and nice accuracy, making it a versatile weapon from all areas of the court. While the paint scheme may not be for everyone, the Drive Z Lite will fit a wide range of players. It is a great option for intermediate players and developing juniors and it also has ample room for bigger hitters to customize to their desired specs!
